“At the end of the day, I want people to feel like I’ve taken care of them. I want them to look around their homes and think, ‘Wow, it’s really an expression of who I am.’ ”

Sometimes a home is in your ideal location, but the interiors are a bit forlorn. Other times you adore the overall character of an older space, yet the details have been neglected for years. Instead of simply walking away from a purchase, consider these overlooked spaces as new opportunities. “Start fresh and think about how you really want to live,” Mill Valley-based designer Jennifer Messina says. “Just go into a fixer with a clean mind and a plan. Be excited, but be realistic.”

This beautiful project by @jennifermessinainteriors was a full gut renovation that resulted in an awe-inspiring family home. Messina recently worked with the homeowners on a second design phase, creating a multi-purpose home office space, using Houzz Pro visual tools. She shared that the #houzzpro tools made a huge impact their design process.

When interior designer Jennifer Messina of Dreamlife Design was brought in to help renovate a large Victorian home in Northern California for a family of six, the clients wanted just a few updates. As work got underway on the 19th-century house, however, the homeowners noticed more areas they wanted to revamp. The scope soon expanded again but not by choice. A vendor had accidentally left a third-floor bathroom sink running all weekend.

The idea of wallpaper in a bathroom can cause some anxiety. Will steam from a shower cause the wallpaper to peel away or mold to grow underneath it? Experts seem to agree that if your bathroom has a good exhaust fan that keeps humidity in check, your wallpaper should hold up just fine. Applying an acrylic coating to standard wallpaper, using vinyl wallpaper and not papering near splash zones are additional steps to consider.
