The 5000+ square foot Victorian home built in Mill Valley in the late 1800's sits in a canyon on a hillside with expansive gardens and heritage Redwood trees.
As with any remodel, paint, floors, lighting, and great vendors, are key ingredients to a beautiful, functional outcome. We painted all the interior spaces and the exterior white, which was emotionally and physically challenging, as the existing woodwork was original and stained. However, this design choice made the house less heavy for this San Diego family of six.
The ebony solid stain on the floors created a fresh, powerful contrast to the white walls, which highlighted the intricate existing details. We added custom built-in cabinets and benches made to honor the heritage wood work to support the storage need of a family of six.
The homeowner had incredible vintage french light fixtures that added a special feeling to the entire home (look closely at the dining chandelier and sconces). Matched with design elements like hides, mohair, leather, and velvet, and over-all eclectic aesthetic was accomplished. Adding in vintage andirons and some more industrial pieces helped make this home feel unique.
One of the smallest rooms, that I think is a stand-out, is the powder room. This room was a complete makeover as it lacked the charm and details of the rest of the house (it must have been an add-on in the 80's). By adding wainscoting, a new vintage style trough sink, vintage faucets, industrial pendants, wallpaper on the ceiling and the warmth of a sheepskin rug, we transformed this space into a piece of jewelry.
